Data Loss Prevention (DLP)
We have all heard the horror stories of organisations large and small who have leaked data in a breach. It’s still happening and will continue to happen as it’s highly profitable for the hackers.
Data Loss Prevention, or DLP is a term given to a suite of technologies that can be used to reign in the data leakage by implementing controls around sensitive data types such as passports and other Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that gets stored in systems during the process of doing business.
Ideally we would like to never retain or store Personally Identifiable Information but it happens. With DLP we can implement tools to identify such data types and restrict how they can be shared out of the business, either by requiring approval or manual override to a blocking rule or policy or simply blocking all together.
Data Loss Prevention is an outbound technology that doesn’t restrict your ability to receive or be sent Personally Identifiable Information data you may require to validate someone’s identity.
Data Loss Prevention requires us to work with the business to implement policies and procedures that work for the business. It’s a custom effort for each implementation and requires experience to achieve protection without frustrating the workforce.
